The Top Release of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this work could seem more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop record from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken into four separate parts and sung in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic album investigating feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, often via the lens of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of other artists appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in escape overly intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, with full credit belonging to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions feel far higher here, with the balancing act more precarious. What really elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless want to be alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth brightly during a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops away, and there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic impact. The track then shifts into the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never exactly know—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost each song concludes at a totally different place from where it began. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key balancing act of Lux is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals upward. This trick gets repeated by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of buried treasure that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of the year felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
