The chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the UK might have hit peak pizza while expanding the chain into chicken products has been removed after tensions with its governing body.
The former CEO is exiting after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who served at the company for more than two decades, had attempted to shift Britain's leading pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, remarking in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed poultry was the fastest-growing food category in the world.
Reports indicate that there was tension between the CEO and the board over his approach and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
In the autumn, the chain unveiled its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in the coming year as scheduled, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chairman, commented: “The board believes that there are a series of prospects to drive further growth and value creation in Domino's core business. We are focused on finding the ideal CEO to oversee the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said orders declined by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “grown more challenging” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut disclosed the shutting of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the business behind its outlets entered insolvency.
Adapting to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has launched light products, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 calories as well as plant-based and gluten-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and had a background at the gambling company William Hill. It is understood that she prefers not to take on the top job long-term.
She said: “We have a multiple active expansion and operational projects that we will be dedicated to carrying out at a rapid rate.”
She said these comprised ongoing development on the organization's logistics network and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time CFO until March 16, when a new appointee starts from the beverage producer a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow is temporary CFO.
