A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets across the country and abroad.

"The year's tuna signals good luck," remarked the business owner, a familiar participant at the traditional January sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is famous for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Past

After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price soared before you knew it."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one elated diner.
