The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat earned a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver also said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
