Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.
The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the farmhouse was facing an court order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents caused the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister stated.
Injured individuals by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official thought the detonation had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
