Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
