A standout from Avatar's most adorable Magic cards proves to be a powerful little powerhouse.

Magic: The Gathering’s Avatar crossover set isn't set to get a wider release until later this week, however after prerelease weekends over the last few days, one cheap green card has already exploded in market worth.

Throughout the spoiler season, Badgermole Cub attracted significant interest. A creature with stats 2/2 that costs one green and one colorless mana, the card includes Earthbending 1 (possibly the most effective among the elemental mechanics available). The major perk with this card lies in another power: Each time mana is generated by tapping a creature, you gain one extra green mana.

At its cheapest, the card sold below $30. Following the early events, however, the going rate jumped above $45 including listings priced at sixty dollars. The reason for premium pricing for this cute lil guy? Mostly thanks to the incredible mana acceleration it enables.

Upon entering the battlefield, the cub transforms a terrain card to a creature land granting it earthbend. And with that second ability, as long as it remains on the board, each affected land produces twice the mana — plus other creatures in your control which tap for mana.

The obvious go-to for maximum effect includes this one-mana elf, a low-cost creature which can be tapped for one green mana. However many creatures that make mana out there. Druid of the Cowl is a higher-cost choice with stats 1/3 at a two-mana value as an alternative.

Using land cards, creatures that tap for mana, and Badgermole Cub, it's simple to summon a massive pricey threat into play by round three or four. And things just keep spiraling exponentially by maintaining dominance after that.

By incorporating a secondary color with this approach, options such as these mana-fixing creatures are all great options that generate any mana color. Another card, this powerful dryad allows you to put another terrain each turn as well as transforms every land you control providing all land types. It's also worth trying something like this six-mana enchantment, which for six mana gives every card you own the power to tap and generate any color mana — which covers each creature you have on the board.

Badgermole Cub may be OP in terms of boosting mana production, yet how do you win with this archetype? An often-seen solution has been Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. Its stats are set by the number of lands you control, plus it turns your non-token creatures to be Forests along with their other types. Essentially, all your creatures in play is able to produce double green when tapped.

Another creature is another expensive, beefy creature that thrives with lots of lands (similar to Ashaya, P/T are based on how many lands you have).

Nissa fits really well in this deck. One of her abilities causes all Forests produce extra green. (Combined with earthbend, this results in all earthbend forests produce triple green.) One loyalty ability functions like a form of land animation, placing counters on terrain, which is great but does not overlap with earthbend. Her ultimate, though, grants each land you control unbreakable and lets you draw out every Forest left in your deck. Once you trigger that ability, it almost certainly the game ends.

This card is nearly mandatory in any green-based Avatar strategies built around the earthbend mechanic. If you dip into red and green, there’s Bumi. This card features earthbend 4, plus if he deals combat damage to a player, all land creatures untap for another attack. Even though Bumi has emerged as a popular Commander choice, this small creature will surely stay one of, if not the most desired card from this expansion.
