Abstract Painting in Spain

This historic hillside village, a picturesque white village in southern Spain, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the stimulating backdrop for this art retreat. Painters of every skill level – even beginners – will be taught how to conceive and execute abstract artworks. Some time will be spent outdoors, working on guided exercises in the open. These charcoal drawings and paintings will then be worked on in the workspace, with guests completing multiple abstract landscapes in acrylics to be shown in the local community. The group has exclusive access of the hotel, which is set around an open courtyard and has a rooftop with panoramic vistas over the hills. The price includes five days’ art instruction; full board; and an trip to the local castle and other local sights.

This sun-drenched culinary holiday, based at a riverside villa in the inland Portuguese region, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Attendees will master the art of selection of small dishes, take part in a falafel-making workshop, refine brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses including spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. The schedule includes trips to the village market and a local vineyard to taste local vintages, plus leisure time for strolls by the nearby river, to relax on the terrace or take a dip in the infinity pool. This coastal town is the perfect location for a maritime music retreat. Guests will learn historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and try their hand at composing original ones. There will be vocal warmups, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The holiday is based at a rural hotel with views of St Ives Bay. Full board are provided, such as a traditional tea on the first day, cooked or continental breakfasts, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, unfortunately, is not provided. Writing in Greece

Author and lecturer an experienced instructor runs the daily workshops on this writing retreat. He explores everything from plot, characters, setting and tension, to submitting work to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the beginning and end of the retreat. The retreat is held at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages surround a garden and pool (companions are welcome to share). On the final evening, aspiring writers mark the occasion with a concert in the courtyard and a farewell dinner.

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a wide range of courses on sustainability: from creating habitats to making pallet furniture. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. The weekend is also a opportunity to relax in the organization's sustainably managed woodlands, which are habitat for wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and rare birds.
